Upcoming iPhone too expensive?

February 24th, 2007 by xavila

This ZDNet online article is saying that the upcoming Apple iPhone may be too expensive for the market.

Apple iPhone

Many people are seeing it as a phone with PDA features, but in reality it is more like a mini handheld computer with phone features. Well, at least that is how I see it. The copycats already have started, and the product has not even hit the market yet. Oh what a fun June it is going to be!

My biggest issue with it is that only Cingular will carry it. I am a Sprint customer with a year and a half contract left. I guess I will be waiting for the iPhone 2.0, or the mini iPhone.

Stay tuned for this one!

When a quarter is not just a quarter

February 23rd, 2007 by xavila

One of my daily routines is to buy the newspaper on the way to work. If you have read any of my past posts then you’ll know the I prefer the local paper (Newsday) over its competitors. For one it is catered to the folks of Queens, and Long Island, and if Bloomberg had it his way he would make Nassau the 6th NYC Borough.

But back to my story, In order to make a speedy transaction of this daily routine I always try to have exact change. This involves me having 50 cents ready to give to the newspaper guy and waste as little time as possible. Today as I took the two quarters into my hand and I looked at them, for the first time they peaked my interest.

Quarters from different eras

Here I had two coins with the same denomination but from two totally different eras. One was minted in 1969, way before I was even in the plans to be conceived, an another minted in the year 2000. If we had listened to the Year 2000 Doomsday people, this coin would have been the last one before this heavenly world went KAPOOT! :) Well, at least as computers went that is.

So two coins in my hands that represent the same to millions of people, but yet so different in their craftmanship and history. The 1969 one all worn out, but still in good shape, and the one from 2000 still shinny and with a new design that made it more modern. If you can’t tell by now, or maybe I could not tell till this morning, I really like coins, if nothing more for their longegivity. Ask yourself, when was the last time you held a paper bill that was made in 1969? Exactly, probably not in a long time, or maybe never.

Here’s to the US Quarter! If you feel like a kid, you can check this out.

I am back

February 22nd, 2007 by xavila

It has been almost three years since I updated, and time just seems to fly by! I have decided to change the theme to my blog, and slowly but surely I will customize it to be more like me.

Back in 2003 Britney was kidless and with hair but still blonde and told us to trus our president, Chicago the Movie was the best Oscar picture, and NYC still did not have a good plan for the WTC site.

Today we have a new musical movie with hopes of landing a Best Supporting Actor/Actress in Dreamgirls, Britney has no hair, and NYC may finally have a good WTC design.

The more things change, the more they stay the same!

Spring? Summer? Fall…In NYC

November 1st, 2003 by xavila

It seems like this year mother nature has decided to spare us from the intense weather that we experienced last year and give us a beautiful fall. We have hit temperatures of 70 F degrees (10/31/03) and this is a radical change from last year.

I remember freezing my butt off in the middle of Greenwich Halloween parade as people in crazy customs marched by.

Many people predict that this year’s winter is going to be a rough one. Some say that we will have colder weather than last year, and we will see more snow than Buffalo! I for one predict that this winter will not be as severe as lat year’s. Sure it may still be too early to predict and we may get some cold weather, but from the deexboy’s meteorologic news room I predict a mild winter for NYC.

Let’s just hope that in the middle of February I am not writing differently, for now I will sit here in my shorts and T-shirt with the windows wide open.

September 11 2003

September 11th, 2003 by xavila

I got an idea today from absolutely-vile.com about taking pictures of your day for September 11. Of course they were meant to depict life as been normal, but since I work so close to World Trade Center most of my pictures came out from ground zero. The pictures go in sequence from the moment I stepped out of my house, to the moment I came back home at night. This was defnitely not a typical day for me since I did go out for lunch! So instead of me writing a long entry today, I will just let the pictures talk for themselves. I hope you enjoy them and feel free to leave comments.

Been away, but back now!

August 15th, 2003 by xavila

I know, the number one topic for people today is going to be the Blackout of 2003! If you do not know what this refers to, then do not worry about it, just be glad you were not a tourist in NYC in the last 24 hours.

Myself I have been away for a little bit. I took a vacation in Mexico, and had the best time ever! Mexico city has some of the nicest architecture, and the stories attached to them are out of this world! We were down there and visited a few little cities in between DF and Acapulco such as Cuernavaca and Taxco to name a couple. Just to say it again, it was great! If you want to take a nice vacation, visit Mexcio and all of it’s culture!

I was in the city when the Blackout of 2003 occured; in Tribeca at work to be more specific. I was lucky that someone gave my co-worker and myself a ride to midtown, at which point we met up with my brother who had his car with him. We were in the city until 9 PM and then drove through the Midtown Tunnel into Queens. The traffic was easy going. The funniest thing was to see a byciclist in the East bound lane of the LIE sharing traffic with trucks and cars! I guess it was easier to ride in the expressway where it was lighted up with cars, than in the pitch dark streets! When I say pitch dark, I mean dark dark dark! It was so dark in my building I could not see my hand in front of my face! Luckily for me at the moment I got to my house a lady was coming in as well with a flashlight. She took me all the way to my aparment door. I was indeed lucky!

I definitely liked the way people were co-operating with each other. There was a controlled chaos, and people did not seem to be pacniking. I think we were more prepared for an event of this type. I am definitely glad to be a New Yorker, and share a part of this city with all this wonderful people. As a matter of fact while in Mexico I really appreciated how lucky we are to be living here. I mean Mexico and its people were great, but there is only one New York, New York!

iPod sightings

June 12th, 2003 by xavila

I had the luck of winning a 20 Gb iPod last year. I went to one of those computer vendor dinner/event in which my friend Wendell from San Francisco (while he was in the city) invited me to. Honestly that is the first time I have ever won anything! But I have to admit it is one of the best prizes ever!

Apple recently released the new model. It is thinner, has more capacity, and is just cooler. I definitely do not need more capacity, since with twenty gigs I have only been able to use like 5 Gb. I need to get more music! Although I would love to have the new iPod OS since it allows you to create playlists on the fly in the iPod but I don’t think that one feature is worth an upgrade. I am sure Apple with time will release the upgraded OS for the older models.

I enjoy my iPod the most while I ride the subway and what I find interesting is the amount of people that I see with an iPod riding the subways. You can always spot them because they use the white in the ear Apple headphones, or they have their remote attached to their shirts or bags (I have mine attached to my bag). There is no way of missing them. I can’t use those earbuds because they make my ears hurt, so I use a pair of cheap lightweight Sony headphones. So, since I see so many people with iPods in the train, and we all give each other a small almost unnoticeable nod because of our choice of MP3 players I have decided to keep count of how many people I see with an iPod.

Today’s iPod count on the subways of NYC: 4

If you want to visit a cool site dedicated to the iPod, Ipod Lounge has good content. (Their picture gallery is down for the moment)
